HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES
The Faculty of Medicine established in 1973 under the name of Samsun Faculty of Medicine, which was affiliated to Hacettepe University. The faculty started education in the 1973-1975 academic year and continued its activities until 1978 affiliated to Hacettepe University, was connected to Ondokuz Mayıs University, which was established in 1975. With the decision numbered 78/116 of the faculty board, it was decided that the students of the 1978-79 academic year semesters V and VI, would continue their education in Samsun. With the protocol dated July 26, 1976 between the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the University Rectorate, three-quarters of the Chest Diseases Hospital in Samsun was transferred to the Faculty of Medicine, and the faculty, which was provided with physical facilities, was put into service on May 19, 1978 with a capacity of 225 beds. Thus, it was ensured that the courses and practices of the students of the semesters V and VI were carried out on site. In the same period, the Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases was established and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vasfi Kaynar was appointed as its chairman. Pursuant to the Decree Law No. 41 of the Higher Education Law on the Organization of Higher Education Institutions, the Faculty has maintained its status as a subsidiary of Ondokuz Mayıs University. Since 1982-83, I, II, II and IV grade students who have been continuing their education at Hacettepe University have started to continue their education in Samsun. In 1982, pursuant to paragraph 2 of Law No. 2457, the Department of Microbiology was established under the Department of Basic Medical Sciences. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vasfi Kaynar was appointed as the Chairman. In 1983, at the meeting of the Council of Higher Education on January 15, 1983, it was decided to establish the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology under the Department of Internal Sciences of the Faculty of Medicine, and the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology was established at Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vasfi Kaynar was appointed as its chairman. In 1987, Assistant Professor Dr. Cumhur Özkuyumcu was appointed as the Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, and Assistant Professor Dr. Belma Durupınar was appointed as the Head of the Department of Microbiology, and the department was actually divided into two departments. Assistant Professor Dr. Hakan Leblebicioğlu, who started to work in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology on July 9, 1991, was also appointed as the Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology.
The Head of the Department was carried out by Prof. Dr. Hakan Leblebicioğlu between 1991 and 2006, by Prof. Dr. Necla Tülek between 2006 and 2009, and after March 24, 2009, it was carried out by Prof. Dr. Hakan Leblebicioğlu until July 2016. After this date, the Head of the Department was carried out by Prof. Dr. Şaban Esen.
After February 2021, Prof. Dr. Esra Tanyel was elected as the Head of the Department. Currently, three professors, four associate professors and one assistant professor are actively working in the department.
