History of the Cardiology Department
The Cardiology Department, which previously served as a division of the Internal Medicine Clinic. In the letter of the Presidency of the Council of Higher Education dated 24.12.1990 and numbered 24320, at the meeting of the executive board dated 12.12.1990; the Department of Cardiology was opened within the Internal Medicine departments of all medical faculties that do not have a cardiology department, and it was deemed appropriate in accordance with the 7/d-2 article of the Law No. 2547 as amended by the Law No. 2880.

Cardiology department provides service within the Faculty of Medicine of Ondokuz Mayıs University, which has a history of more than 45 years. He has trained 64 cardiologists so far. Currently, there are 6 professors, 2 associate professors, 2assistant professors and and 12 residents. It has a total bed capacity of 45 as cardiology ward and coronary intensive care unit. In addition to the general cardiology outpatient clinic, hypertension, arrhythmia and pacemaker outpatient clinics serve every day of the week. As laboratory services, invasive catheterization and electrophysiology laboratory, exercise stress test, echocardiography, Holter, Tilt test and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring can be performed. All kinds of complicated percutaneous interventions and percutaneous treatment of adult congenital diseases can be performed in the coronary angiography laboratory. TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation), the type of heart valve replacement that is popularly described as non-incisional or bloodless, is successfully performed in our clinic without the need for surgery. In addition, the catheterization laboratory is available 24 hours a day for primary PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention). In our electrophysiology laboratory, diagnostic electrophysiological studies, ablation therapy, pacemaker, cardiac resynchronization therapy and ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator - permanent pacemaker with shocking) implantations are performed.
Structure and Academic Mission of the Department
As Cardiology Department; to monitor research, studies and developments in the field of cardiovascular health; To encourage participation in research and trials on this subject in our country. To carry out medical and social studies on cardiovascular diseases and to organize educational and instructive meetings for medical personnel and the public, to try to ensure that the medical profession related to cardiovascular health is organized and developed in the best way for the benefit of the public. O.M.U. Cardiology, as a part of cardiology medical education, residents are supported and encouraged to do research. Faculty support, computer/library services are provided for clinical and basic scientific research. Faculty members have databases containing patient information, and after the decision of the faculty member and the local ethics committee about the study, scientific studies can be carried out by the residents to expand their own hypotheses or in line with the suggestions of the faculty member. Literature hours and seminars are held on Wednesdays and Thursdays with the participation of faculty members, residents and medical students throughout the year.
Coronary Intensive Care Unit and Cardiology Ward
The coronary intensive care unit is located inside the ward on the 4th floor of the hospital. In the intensive care unit, which has 14 beds, there are 14 bedside monitors with a central monitorization system where all kinds of invasive monitorization can be made. There are also 5 mobile monitors with defibrillator feature. In addition to these, 1 intraaortic balloon pump and 2 mechanical ventilator serve If needed. In addition, 2 mobile echocardiography devices can be used in the ward for emergency situations and for the evaluation of inpatients. Our cardiology ward is located on the 4th floor next to the coronary intensive care unit. The service has a total of 31 beds, consisting of 7 private, 12 double rooms.
Cardiology Department, Outpatient Clinic and Echocardiography
Cardiology polyclinic and department are located on the ground floor of the hospital. In the department, there is 1 general cardiology outpatient clinic, 1 hypertension and lipid polyclinic, and 1 arrhythmia and holter polyclinic. There are 3 ECO, 2 ECG and 1 Exercise Test rooms in the department, next to the polyclinics. One treadmill device serves for exercise stress test. There are special rooms where TEE and Tilt testing can be done. In the polyclinic, there is the Cardiology Department, where the offices of the faculty members are located. Again, there is a meeting room in the within the polyclinic where meetings and seminars are held.
Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Laboratories
HThe catheterization laboratories are located on the ground floor of the hospital, there are 2 catheter rooms, a council room, rest rooms, patient preparation and follow-up rooms before and after angiography, dressing rooms, material rooms and warehouses. Siemens and Philips branded 2 angiography systems are in service. Approximately 3100 coronary angiography, 1500 balloon angioplasty - stent procedures and 100-150 permanent pacemaker implantation are performed annually in the laboratory. The laboratory is available 24 hours an emergency, especially for primary PTCA.
In our electrophysiology laboratory; ICD and biventricular pacemaker implantation, electrophysiological study and radiofrequency ablation procedures can still be performed.
