HISTORY
The Department of Neurology at Ondokuz Mayıs University was founded in 1977 by Dr. Ali İhsan Baysal and Dr. Gülten Tunalı. In its early years, the department operated at the Pulmonary Diseases Center in the city center. In 1986, it relocated to its current location at the University’s Health, Practice, and Research Center. Since its establishment, the department has played a pioneering role in scientific research, excellence in patient care, community contribution, and high-quality education standards—both in the Samsun region and on national and international platforms.

Mission and Vision
The Department of Neurology at Ondokuz Mayıs University aims to deliver the highest standard of healthcare for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of neurological diseases, in line with the principles of modern medicine. With an evidence-based, innovative, and patient-centered approach, the department targets both the neurological health issues affecting society and the public’s health education needs. It continuously updates itself in education, research, and clinical practice to maintain a respected position nationally and internationally. The department offers medical students and neurology residents the opportunity to be trained as ethically conscious professionals equipped with contemporary knowledge and skills. It also aims to contribute to academic knowledge through research in the field of neurosciences and to develop innovative solutions for the treatment of neurological diseases. As a leader in postgraduate neurology education at the regional level, OMU Neurology is also a key stakeholder in Turkey on a national scale. The department provides high-standard, individualized tertiary healthcare services for the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders, serving as the final referral center for the most complex and challenging cases in the region. It specializes in a broad spectrum of disorders, including dementia, movement disorders, stroke, neuromuscular diseases, headaches, demyelinating diseases, epilepsy, swallowing, and sleep disorders. Diagnostic processes include advanced imaging techniques, electrophysiological evaluations, endoscopic assessments, and laboratory analyses. Treatment focuses on enhancing patients' quality of life and improving the course of chronic diseases through medication, interventional procedures, and multidisciplinary approaches. The department actively participates in national and international initiatives in neuroscience education, research and development, community service, and leadership.
Education and Academic Activities
To date, the OMU Department of Neurology has graduated 61 neurology specialists and continues its educational activities with 30 resident physicians. Many of the specialists trained at the department have gone on to become academic faculty members. The department actively participates in national and international academic projects, leading scientific research initiatives. In line with the Turkish Neurological Society’s accreditation program and the TUK-MOS Neurology core curriculum, various educational strategies and comprehensive assessment and evaluation processes are implemented.
