HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
Ondokuz Mayıs University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Nuclear Medicine, received approval from YÖK in 1988. In 1989 under the founding chairmanship of İrem ERİM, MD, the department started its activities. Between 1999-2023, Tarık BAŞOĞLU, MD was the head of the Department. Since 2023, Fevziye CANBAZ TOSUN, MD took over the head of the Department. The current academic staff of the Department of Nuclear Medicine (October 2023) includes three faculty members, one expert physicist, and nine assistant doctors.

Nuclear Medicine Purpose and Function
Nuclear medicine is a branch of internal medicine in which radioactive elements or chemical compounds labelled with radioactive elements (Radiopharmaceuticals) or biological materials are used in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. In nuclear medicine, the functions of the organs and systems are examined by imaging (scintigraphy-functional map) or without images (quantitatively). Nuclear medicine procedures, within indications, are performed in all stages of patient management, for diagnosis, treatment, response to treatment, detection of relapses, restaging, etc.
A. EDUCATION-TRAINING ACTIVITIES:
1- Pre-Graduation Trainings
Medical School:
Moderation/ chieftaincy is provided by faculty members in Class I, II and III in “Problem Based Learning” Blocks; In Class II, III, IV and V, lectures and practical courses on Nuclear Medicine applications are performed.
2- Post-Graduation Trainings (Specialization Student)
Specialist Student Training Program (Minimum Standards)
1. Nuclear Medicine Internal Training
During the Nuclear Medicine specialty training, the training within the department is planned in 4 parts:
a. Theoretical syllabus including the Core Curriculum
b. Applied skills (Practical training)
c. Internal rotation program
D. Thesis phase
2. External Rotation Programs
It is a legal obligation to perform the rotations specified in the Medical Specialization Regulation. These are referred to as external rotations. The rotation program expected to be carried out by the commissions to be formed when the newly structured Medical Specialization Education Regulation is published is as follows:
External rotations in the 4-year Nuclear Medicine specialty training:
a‒ Internal medicine rotation
I. Endocrinology and metabolism: One month
ii. Medical Oncology: One month
b‒ Cardiology: One month
c‒ Radiology: Two months
The rotations and durations foreseen in the program, whose training period is 4 years according to the Medical Specialization Regulation, require working in the nuclear medicine department for a minimum of 3 years and 7 months, and 5 months in other departments (radiology, endocrinology, cardiology and medical oncology) according to the rotations determined by the Nuclear Medicine Specialization Training and Curriculum commission. [Nuclear Medicine Specialty Training Program, April 2022, v.3.0].
B.RESEARCH
In addition to their education and training activities, the academic staff of the Department of Nuclear Medicine with its technical team, carries out scientific activities in national and international platforms on various subjects such as cardiology , oncology diagnosis and treatment, new generation imaging devices, radiopharmaceuticals and radiation safety.
