HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL BIOLOGY
The Department of Medical Biology, which carries out its activities under Ondokuz Mayıs University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Basic Medical Sciences, was founded in 1983 by Prof. Dr. Gülsen ÖKTEN. Later, with the decision of YÖK dated 26.02.1998, the Department of Medical Genetics was established, and with the decision dated 26.07.2012, the Departments of Medical Biology, Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics were founded.
ACADEMIC OBJECTIVES OF OUR DEPARTMENT
Our department's mission is to carry out educational activities in medical education with the perspectives of cell biology, molecular biology, medical genetics and molecular genetics within the scope of basic life sciences and to conduct scientific research in these fields. In addition, it aims to contribute to society by upbringing human resources with inquiring, questioning and analyzing capabilities employing providing postgraduate level education. The Department of Medical Biology has adopted the principle of showing the necessary care and contribution to human health by upbringing individuals who succeed in meetening academic life with cultural foundations, producing knowledge for other scientific fields that require expertise, sharing the knowledge they produce and applying that knowledge to modern technology.
Location and Equipment of the Department of Medical Biology
Our department is on the 2nd floor of the Basic Medical Sciences Building of the Faculty of Medicine, located in the Kurupelit Campus of Ondokuz Mayıs University. The Department of Medical Biology has cell and tissue culture and molecular genetics laboratories. Routine cytogenetic and molecular genetic diagnoses were performed for 25 years between 1987 and 2012.
Scientific Research Areas
Researches are carried out on genetic variations in common diseases, genetics of male and female infertility, epigenetics, cancer, cell culture research, and genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of frequently used drugs.
Educational Program of the Department of Medical Biology Undergraduate Education
Lecturers of the Department of Medical Biology give theoretical and practical courses to the Term I students of the Turkish and English Teaching Program of Ondokuz Mayıs University, Faculty of Medicine. They work as a moderator in the PBL classes of Term I, II and III. In addition, lecturers give presentations on the course subjects of the department and they also undertake term coordinators, responsibilities and memberships in measurement and evaluation boards and block boards, and translation board membership. In addition, our department offers medical biology and genetics courses to the Faculties of Dentistry and Pharmacy, and Human Genetics and Cancer Biology, Cell Biology and Genetics courses to the Molecular Biology and Genetics department of the Faculty of Science.
Master's and Doctoral Education
The Department of Medical Biology also carries out master's and doctoral education programs within the scope of the Institute of Health Sciences. The language of instruction for Master's and Doctoral programs is Turkish. The graduate education program aims at students to be able to reach original results by using the knowledge that requires expertise in analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating new and complex ideas, approaching new information in their fields in a systematic way, gaining high-level skills in research methods related to their fields of expertise, develop a new scientific method that brings innovation to science, or apply a known method to a new field and thus contribute to science by producing an original study that can be published.
Master's and PhD students who graduated from the Department of Medical Biology and are still students
Currently, 7 Master's and 12 PhD students are continuing their education in the graduate education programs of our department. Until today, 19 PhD and 16 Master's students have graduated from the training programs. 14 The faculty members of our department give master's and 35 doctoral courses within the scope of Master's and Doctoral education programs.
