History of the Department
The Department of Biophysics, located within the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at Ondokuz Mayıs University, Faculty of Medicine, was established in 1983 as a division within the Department of Physiology by Prof. Dr. İsmail GÜNAY. It gained the status of a separate Department in 1987 by the decision of the Council of Higher Education (CoHE) and expanded its academic activities.

Academic Goals of Our Department
To teach medical faculty students the physical foundations of biological systems, biohysical mekanizm in cell membrane physiology, the formation mechanisms of bioelectric potentials, and the working principles of diagnostic and therapeutic devices used in medicine; To provide an understanding of the physical mechanisms at the molecular level of basic physiological processes such as ion channels in the body, nerve transmission, and muscle contraction; To raise physicians who have a perspective integrated with clinical sciences and who can think analytically by gaining competence in electrophysiology, radiation biophysics, and biological signal analysis in the light of recent scientific developments; To raise scientists who command scientific research methodology, follow current literature, and are committed to ethical values.
Location and Equipment of the Department of Biophysics
Our department is located in the Basic Medical Sciences building of the Faculty of Medicine at the Ondokuz Mayıs University Kurupelit Campus. In the research laboratories of our department, there are magnetic field measuring device to research biological effect of electromagnetic field, iontophoresis device, for electrophysiological methods, Isolated Organ Bath systems (for mechanical activities of smooth muscle and cardiac muscle), Microelectrode recording systems, Light Microscopes, a Magnetic Nanoparticle chemical laboratory, and computer-aided data analysis systems. However, research studies are conducted on the biological effects of electromagnetic fields and electrophysiology.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAM OF THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOPHYSICS
Undergraduate Education
Continuing its educational activities from its establishment to the present, the faculty members of the Department of Biophysics provide Biophysics courses (Cell Biophysics, Radiation Biophysics, Circulatory and Respiratory Biophysics, etc.) to Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III students in the Turkish and English teaching programs of the Faculty of Medicine. In addition, they carry out duties as educational guides in PBL (Problem-Based Learning) classes for Phase I, II, and III, and as Block Committee Members. In addition to Faculty of Medicine courses, theoretical and applied biophysics courses are also given to students of the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Pharmacy.
Medical Specialization, Master's, and PhD Education
Radiological Sciences Master's and PhD programs conducted within the Institute of Health Sciences are carried out by the faculty members of the Department. Thesis studies are conducted in these programs. To date, Master's and PhD students have graduated from our department and have been gained to the academic community. Our faculty members have numerous articles published in national and international respected journals (SCI/SCI-E).
