Our History
Ondokuz Mayis University Hospital General Surgery Departmen1 was established in 1978 by firof. Dr. Kayfian Özkan. There are currently 13 faculty members in the Department. Studies and training on all current and specific issues of general surgery are still ongoing up to date.
ïn our department:
There are two working groups, Group A and ‹sroup B. This distinction was created according to the work pląn, not according to specialization. While 2 Professors, ž Associate Professors and 2 Assistant Professors are working in group A, there are 3 Pro fessors, 2 Associate Professors and 1 Assistant Professor in B group. Seminars, literature hours, morality and morbidity hours and all other educational meetings are held jointly by both groups. In the cíinfc where TO assistant doctors work, 2-3 assistants complete their surgical training every year.
General Surgery Ward
There are 60 beds in the clinic and annualy around 1300 surgeries are performed . Also, diagnostic gastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, and PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomyl procedures are performed in the Endoscopy Unit wi‹hin the department. in addition to that, Rectoscopy Unit, a Stoma Care Unit , to assist in the folbw-up anö treatment of patients with colostomy-ileostomy, and a polyclinic for outpatients are actively serving in our department.
Breast Surgery
lncisional, excisional, fine needle aspiration, tru-cut, wire marking and vacuum assisted breast biopsies are successfuííy performed in correlation with the radiology department. Breast conserving surgery, mastectomy and axiîîary dissection are performed. When sentinel Ïympń node giopsy 's indicated, blue dye is used or the procedure is applied with the fieIp of Gamma Probe in association with the nuclear medicine department,
Endocrine Surgery
In our depanment, thyroid and parathyroid surgery and adrenal surgery are performed conventionally or laparoscopically. Especially in parathyroid diseases, surgical treatment is applled using Gamma Probe in correlation with the nuclear medltine department.
Hepato-pancreatico-biliary Surgery
Surgical interventions for the Ïiver, biliary tract and pancreas, namely major hepatectomies, pancreatectomy (Whipple surgery, distal/total), laparoscopic cholecystectomy and other bile duct surgeries are pet4ormed successfuMy. In addition, pancreatitis patients are followed up and treated in our clinic.
Colorectal Surgery
Hemorrńoidectomy, anal fistula, anal prołapse, colon and rectum surgery are performed according to current treatment principì es. These interventions are also performed laparoscopically.
Gastroesophageal Surgery
For gastric cancer. total or subtotal gastrectomy (with Dî/02 lymph node dissection) and esophageal resection are performed.
laparoscopic Surgery
In our clinic, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, splenectomy, adrenalectomy, colectomy, Miles surgery, inguinal and ventral hernia repairs, hydatid cyst, anîirefÏux surgery and diagnostic procedures are performed laparoscopically.
Emergency Surgery
Our department, with its feature of being a part of central hospital in the region, is a tlinic that is specialised for the treatment of bath traumatic and other causes of emergency surgical pathologies. Approximately 20% of the patients hospitaÌizeä ïn our cİinic are emergency cases.
Nutrition
The nutrition board (OBEK) established within our facu|ty continues to function under the leadership of the Departmen1 of Gen eral Surgery to organize and direct treatments, and to provide nutritional support to patients who cannot be fed mostly due to cancer or øther diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
