General Definition of the Department Pathology department receives speciments directly or as a consultation both from the Ondokuz Mayıs University Hospital and other hospitals in Samsun and neighborhooding provinces, and speciments are evaluated for diagnosis, follow up and medical and/or surgical treatment of various diseases. The rutine procedures include tissue processing, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, macroscopic and microscopic evaluation, cytopathologic as well as molecular tests, all performed in specialised laboratories. Advanced microscopy and intraoperative consultation by frozen sections are also performed. Advanced microscopy procedures include image analysis, DNA ploidy analysis, immunofluorescent microscopy, fluorescent/silver in situ hybridisation (FISH/SISH) and can be used for both rutine materials or medical research. Annually approximately 27 000 speciments, with 21 000 tissue samples and 6 000 cytology samples are processed and reported. Our academic staff takes part in the education of basic and specialised pathology topics and laboratory practicals in Medical and Dendistry and Health Sciences Schools. Various medical research activities including thesis projects both from within or outside our department are conveyed.
