History of the Department
Before talking about the establishment and history of Ondokuzmayıs University, Faculty of Medicine, Brain and Nerve Surgery, it is necessary to mention three important dates. The first of these dates is 06.08.1970. On this date, Samsun Ondokuzmayıs University Establishment Association was established and started its activities. The aim of this association is to lead the establishment of a university in Samsun, a Black Sea city, and to create the necessary political infrastructure for this. Üstün Kösefoğlu, Nazım Tıkıroğlu, Uzman Melikoğlu, Avni Kaynar, Dr. are members of the board of directors of the association. Sait Erbil and Hasan Nejat Öğüt contacted interested parties and initiated the establishment of the University (Picture 6).
The full name of the association was "Association for Establishing and Sustaining Ondokuzmayıs University". This association was the most organized and systematic initiative created to establish a university in the city of Samsun. Of course, considering the general conditions of Turkey at that time, it could not be expected to yield immediate results. Approximately six years after the establishment of this association, Ondokuzmayıs University was officially established on April 1, 1975. A local newspaper congratulated the three women who contributed to the establishment of the University for their association work (Figure 7). Four universities were established in Turkey with the law numbered 1873, dated April 1, 1975. These universities are Fırat University in Elazığ, Ondokuzmayıs University in Samsun, Bursa University in Bursa and Selçuk University in Konya. The establishment of these Universities was published in the Official Gazette on April 11, 1975 (Figure 8).
Medical School
Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine took the lead in the opening of Ondokuzmayıs University Faculty of Medicine and the determination of its staff. Prof. who was the Rector of Hacettepe University at that time. Dr. İhsan Doğramacı made special contributions. Faculty members appointed from Hacettepe University formed the Senate of Ondokuzmayıs University. Among this group, Prof. Dr. Tahsin Tuncalı is recorded as the first founding rector of Ondokuzmayıs University (Figure 9). The first Dean of the Faculty of Medicine was Prof. also from Hacettepe University. Dr. It is Sevinç Oral (Figure 10).
Samsun Faculty of Medicine
Hacettepe University Senate's decision dated 09.12.1972 and numbered 72-498 announced the establishment of a Faculty of Medicine named "Samsun Faculty of Medicine". In the Senate decision, "Our University Senate Rector Dr. It was convened under the chairmanship of İhsan DOĞRAMACI. "In accordance with Article 2 of Law No. 892 regarding the establishment of Hacettepe University, it was decided to open "Samsun Medical Faculty" affiliated with our University to cover the last 3 clinical classes." Therefore, the name Samsun Medical Faculty dates back to Ondokuzmayıs University. Samsun Faculty of Medicine started its education and training activities at Hacettepe University in 1973. With the official establishment of Ondokuzmayıs University in 1975, Ondokuzmayıs University was affiliated here as the Faculty of Medicine, but it continued to be affiliated with Hacettepe University, Faculty of Medicine until 1978.
Meanwhile, efforts to move the faculty, now known as Ondokuzmayıs University, Faculty of Medicine, to Samsun and establish its campus there continued. A hospital building is needed to establish departments in Samsun. In order to meet this need, an application was made to the Ministry of Health and a protocol was established with the Ministry of Health and it was decided that the Faculty of Medicine Hospital would operate in a section of Samsun Chest Diseases Hospital. In this context, a part of Samsun Chest Diseases Hospital was transferred to the faculty. On May 19, 1978, the Faculty of Medicine Practice and Research Hospital was officially opened and started its operations. A ceremony attended by many people was held for the opening of this hospital (Figures 11 and 12). Meanwhile, the construction of the Ondokuzmayıs University Campus, the foundation of which was laid on March 26, 1976, continues rapidly and the Faculty of Medicine Application and Research Hospital appears as the largest building of the campus (Pictures 13 and 14).
Although the Faculty of Medicine Practice and Research Hospital has become operational in Samsun, not all Faculty of Medicine students have been brought to Samsun from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine. With the decision of the Faculty Administrative Board numbered 78/116, students of the Faculty of Medicine can enter the V and VI classes. It has been announced that the students studying in this class will receive their next education and training in Samsun. The start of education and training in Samsun for all classes coincides with the 1982-1983 academic year. The Faculty of Medicine, which opened the 1982-1983 academic year in Samsun, was faced with some physical impossibilities. Since the physical space where especially first and second year students would study was not available in the hospital in the city, these students started to study in the building located in Atakum, which serves as the Faculty of Education. Perhaps the most important of these physical impossibilities is the anatomy courses taken by second-year students of the Faculty of Medicine. Second-year students who received cadaver training could encounter interesting reactions from the students of the faculty of education who also studied here. Because the cadaver, which a Faculty of Medicine student sees as a part of his education, had different meanings for the students of the Faculty of Education. One way or another, these difficult, troublesome and troublesome years have been overcome. In 1984-1985, courses began to be givenb for first and second graders at the Ondokuzmayıs University Campus, 18 kilometers away from the city. Now, students of the Faculty of Medicine were studying in large and modern lecture halls. Although these lecture halls were quite sufficient and modern in terms of physical capacity, they faced another impossibility here. These were transportation and housing problems. Public transportation coming from the city periodically was sometimes insufficient in terms of physical capacity, and students had to reach the city center by crowded buses. For this reason, students who queued for the bus in the early hours of the morning were again queuing for the bus on campus late in the evening after leaving campus.
Brain and Nerve Surgery
The establishment of Brain and Nerve Surgery is quite special within this story of the establishment of Ondokuzmayıs University and before that, Samsun Faculty of Medicine. It was called Neurosurgery clinic back then. The founders of the Department of Neurosurgery are Prof., who is also from Hacettepe. Dr. Fahrettin Çelik and Prof. Dr. Cemil Rakunt.
Samsun and Brain Surgery Practice
Samsun province is a city with interesting features in terms of neurosurgery practice. Before talking about this feature of Samsun province, it would be appropriate to talk about Anatolia in the Neolithic age.
Data obtained from excavations in areas where people lived in Neolithic times have shown trapenations made on skulls. The healing process of the bone structures at the edges of this trapenation can be considered as a finding that these interventions were successful and people survived after the procedure. Surgical instruments obtained from excavations from this period are parallel to the design and production technology of that period. Many findings were found in Anatolian lands during these ages. These findings were published by Erbengi in the Turkish Neurosurgery journal.
Samsun-İkiztepe region is undoubtedly an important center for neurosurgery operations performed in prehistoric times. The findings obtained in this region are exhibited in Samsun Ethnography Museum (Picture 17, Picture 18, Picture 19, Picture 20). It is possible to see microsurgical instruments from this period in this museum. Examples from this period can be multiplied. The tool that Neolithic people designed and used for trapenation was chipped stone or polished stone, which they developed in accordance with the technology of that day (Figure 21). Sharp stones that are carved or shaped by a certain process are exhibited in museums as a product of individual thought, design and natural limitations.
Bafra İkiztepe mound, located within the borders of Samsun province, is only 15 kilometers away from Ondokuzmayıs University. Therefore, brain surgery in this city dates back to prehistoric times. In the pictures below, the operated skull findings found in the Bafra İkiztepe mound are shared.
He served as the Head of the Department of Ondokuzmayıs University Faculty of Medicine for a long time. Dr. Fahrettin Çelik and Prof. Dr. Cemil Rakunt did it. Prof. Dr. Fahrettin Çelik and Prof. Dr. They have worked here since the establishment of the Cemil Rakunt Department and were its founding president. Prof. Dr. Upon his retirement in 2012, Fahrettin Çelik served as the Head of the Department with Prof. Dr. Undertaken by Cengiz Çokluk.
