History
The Faculty of Medicine of Ondokuz Mayıs University was established in 1973 as the Samsun Faculty of Medicine, affiliated with Hacettepe University. In 1975, it was affiliated with Ondokuz Mayıs University under Law No. 1873.
Until 1978, the faculty continued its educational activities within Hacettepe University. With the opening of the Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine Hospital on May 19, 1978, Grade IV and V medical students began receiving their theoretical and practical training there. In the same year, the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology was established under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Öner Gedikoğlu.
Following the move to its current hospital building in 1985, Prof. Dr. Birol Gülman assumed the Chair of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology.

Vision
The foundation of our vision is to train orthopedic specialists who possess the knowledge, skills, and competence to practice orthopedics and traumatology anywhere in the country or the world, and who contribute to the academic development of medical faculties in surrounding provinces with the experience gained in our department.
Mission
Our mission is to be a center of excellence in academic, clinical, and educational fields, successfully treating every orthopedic and traumatic condition in our region.
Graduates and Academic Staff
Since its establishment, our department has trained 64 specialist physicians. In addition, we have produced six professors, nine associate professors, and two assistant professors. Some of these faculty members have gone on to establish Departments of Orthopedics and Traumatology in the medical faculties of nearby provinces (as of November 2023).

Our department serves as a regional reference center for bone and soft tissue tumors. The Multidisciplinary Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Board—including radiology, pathology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, and other related specialties—convenes every Wednesday between 09:00 and 10:00. Established in 1998, the board has evaluated or treated approximately 4,000 patients to date.
Inpatient Services
Our department offers care in a 48-bed inpatient facility.
Annual inpatient admissions: 1,989 Annual number of surgeries: 2,063 We operate with three dedicated operating rooms daily, with the capacity to increase if needed. Annual outpatient visits: 15,276 (2022 data)
National Accreditation
Kliniğimiz 29 Eylül 2023’te, yaklaşık 1 yıllık bir değerlendirmenin sonucunda, Türk Ortopedi ve Travmatoloji Derneği Birliği (TOTBİD) tarafından akredite edilen sayılı klinikler arasındadır. Bu özelliği ile Karadeniz Bölgesi’ndeki ilk akredite klinik olmuştur. Ayrıca kliniğimizdeki her öğretim üyesinin, ortopedi ve travmatoloji yeterlilik sertifikası bulunmaktadır (TOTEK Eğitim Belgesi).
Ulusal ve Uluslararası Fellowship Programları
On 29 September 2023, following a nearly one-year evaluation process, our department became one of the few clinics to be accredited by the Turkish Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (TOTBİD). With this achievement, we became the first accredited orthopedic clinic in the Black Sea Region. All faculty members also hold the Orthopedics and Traumatology Proficiency Certificate (TOTEK).
National & International Fellowship Programs
Our department hosts many residents and specialists from Turkey and abroad, particularly in the field of bone and soft tissue tumors. Typically organized as 3-month observational rotations, these programs allow participants to enhance their knowledge and experience under the supervision of our faculty.
