History

Ondokuz Mayıs University, Medical Faculty, Ophthalmology Department was established in 1977 by Prof.Dr.İhsan ÖGE. Since its inception, our clinic has been successfully carrying out the basic functions of university clinics, such as education of students and residents, scientific research activities, and up-to-date health care services.

By the year 2017, our clinic provides ophthalmological care with 23-bed inpatient clinic, operating room, comprehensive outpatient clinic, and specialized clinics such as glaucoma, strabismus, uvea- Behcet, retina vitreous, neuroophthalmology, contact lens, oculoplastic, cornea, and ocular electrophysiology. Specialized faculty members are responsible from each unit. The residents make rotations in these clinics and get experience. At this point, our clinic offer qualified service with 8 faculty members, 12 residents, and 24 nurses and staff. It is a part of the well-established university in Black Sea Region and has been carrying the responsibility of becoming a reference clinic in a wide geographical region for years.

Clinics and Faculty Members

1- Our comprehensive eye clinic conducts routine examination for the patients who admit for the first time. If necessary, eyeglasses are prescribed or wide range of simple eye problems are treated. If there is a more serious problem, the patients are consulted to subspecialty clinics.

2-Retina Clinic: Prof. Dr. Yüksel SÜLLÜ, Prof. Dr. Hakkı BİRİNCİ, and Assist. Prof. Dr. Özlem E. YÜCEL are the supervisors of this unit. The diagnosis and treatment of the diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration, intraocular hemorrhages, and congenital retinal diseases are performed in this clinic. Intraocular injections, fundus fluorescein angiography and laser procedures are applied. Vitreoretinal surgery is performed with or without cataract surgery. Congenital cataract surgeries and all kinds of intraocular lens implantations are also carried out.

3-Glaucoma Clinic: Prof. Dr. Nurşen ARITÜRK is the supervisor of this unit. The diagnosis and the treatment of the patients with glaucoma are performed. Visual field interpretation, laser applications, medical and surgical treatment for glaucoma are applied.

4-Cornea Clinic: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ertuğrul CAN is the supervisor of this unit. Medical treatment of corneal disease, corneal transplantation, cross-linking applications for keratoconus patients, and cataract an refractive surgeries are performed. Premium lens implantation is considered upon demand of patients.

5-Neuro-ophthalmology Unit: Prof. Dr. İnci GÜNGÖR is the supervisor of this unit. The diseases affecting optic nerve, unexplained visual loss, and double vision problems are investigated and managed in this clinic. Electrophysiological tests including VEP, ERG, and multifocal ERG are performed.

6-Strabismus Clinic: Assist. Prof. Dr. Leyla N. Şahin is the supervisor of this unit. All strabismus types are examined, diagnosed and treated. Correcting spectacles and prisms as well as surgical approach are applied for treatment of strabismus. Botox applications is also conducted if needed. Amblyopia patients are followed up in this unit.

7-Contact Lens Clinic: Prof. Dr. İnci GÜNGÖR is the supervisor of this unit. Daily contact lens applications, contact lens treatments in infants after cataract surgery, contact lens treatments in myopia and hypermetropia, and hard contact lens applications in keratoconus patients are performed.

8-Uvea Clinic: Prof. Dr. Yüksel SÜLLÜ and Assist. Prof. Dr. Hilal E. ÖZTÜRK are the supervisors of this unit. Diagnosis and management of uveitis patients are performed in collaboration with rheumatologists.

9-ROP Clinic: Özlem E. YÜCEL is the supervisor of this unit. "Retinopathy of prematurity " seen in premature babies is diagnosed, followed up and treated.

10-Oculoplasty Clinic: Nurşen ARITÜRK is the supervisor of this unit. Eyelid surgeries, periorbital tumor treatments and nasolacrimal duct operations are performed.

Appointment: The appointments for comprehensive outpatient clinics are scheduled by phone or by online system since the beginning of 2018. The appointments for subspecialty clinics are scheduled by secretary of the outpatient clinic.
