The Theoretical Structure and Academic Purpose of the Department:
Dermatology is a branch of science that focuses on the structure, functions, and diseases of the skin and its appendages (hair, nails, sweat glands). It includes sub-disciplines such as Venereology (sexually transmitted diseases), photodermatology, dermatopathology, dermatological surgery, pediatric dermatology, and cosmetic dermatology. In the Dermatology Department, in addition to the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases, cosmetic applications are also carried out.
The fundamental goals of our department are to train scientists in this field, address the issues of the discipline, apply diagnosis and treatments related to skin and venereal diseases, and conduct experimental and clinical studies on topics relevant to the discipline.
Teaching Type:
Pre-Graduation Education:
In our department, a 3-week Dermatology training is provided for fifth-year medical students within the framework of a problem-based teaching system. This training includes rotations in inpatient dermatology clinics and general outpatient clinics. The main objectives of the dermatology internship are to cover the structure of the skin, its functions, maintaining skin health, hypersensitivity reactions of the skin, infectious, metabolic, neoplastic diseases, skin manifestations of systemic diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, hair and nail diseases, diagnostic methods for skin diseases, and topical and systemic treatments.
In addition to theoretical lessons, students actively participate in observing outpatient clinics and patient rounds with teaching staff. The goal is for students to acquire the knowledge and skills to diagnose, and treat patients in primary healthcare settings, and refer them to a dermatology specialist when necessary.
Postgraduate Education:
1st-Year Resident:
First-year residents are responsible for examining dermatological patients and following up on inpatient cases. They conduct examinations and treatments with the supervision of a more senior resident. Additionally, during the first year, they work in outpatient clinics, assisting second and third-year residents. They also participate in on-call duties every 4 to 5 days and attend weekly training seminars, classes, literature hours, and national congresses as part of their training.
2nd-Year Resident:
Second-year residents increase their experience by participating in a rotation program with the Psychiatry and Pathology Departments. They are on call every 4 to 5 days and attend weekly training seminars, classes, literature hours, and national congresses as part of their training.
3rd-Year Resident:
Third-year residents enhance their experience by participating in a rotation program with the Internal Medicine and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Departments. They learn and perform dermatological treatments and procedures (such as nail matrixectomy, biopsy, cryotherapy, etc.) under the guidance of senior residents and faculty members. They are on call every 4 to 5 days and participate in weekly training seminars, classes, literature hours, and national congresses as part of their training.
4th-Year Resident:
Fourth-year residents observe all activities in dermatology clinics, provide guidance to junior residents, and carry out practical applications under the supervision of a faculty member. They are on call every 4 to 5 days and participate in weekly training seminars, classes, literature hours, and national congresses as part of their training.
