History of the Department
Ondokuzmayıs University Department of Chest Diseases was established in 1983. Currently, 3 professors and 2 associate professors constitute the academic staff. So far, 45 research assistants have received the title of Chest Diseases specialist. Currently, 13 research assistants are continuing their clinical practice and theoretical training for specialization.

Theoretical Structure and Academic Objectives of the Department
The Department of Chest Diseases is an important reference hospital for our region, serving a diverse and varied patient population in both outpatient and clinic settings. The Chest Diseases service serves with a total of 35 beds, including three private rooms, 4 chemotherapy beds and two in the sleep unit. Chemotherapy is applied to patients with lung cancer and inpatient treatment is available. Our Department of Chest Diseases serves our patients with 3 outpatient clinics. Our department has a video bronchoscopy unit, spirometer, and skin prick test. Endobronchial ultrasonography-guided bronchoscopy (EBUS) is also performed. Diagnostic and interventional procedures are also performed with thoracic ultrasonography. There is a sleep unit in the chest diseases clinic where patients with sleep problems are evaluated, which was accredited in 2014 and provides training to specialist physicians in the Central Black Sea region. More than 1000 bronchoscopies, over 5000 pulmonary function tests and over 50 pleural biopsies are performed annually in our department. A total of 45 people have graduated from our department as Chest Diseases specialists and 13 research assistants are still continuing their specialty training.

Type of Education
Pre-Graduation Education:
Term 1, 2 and 3 students attend lecture presentations within the scope of problem-based teaching ; they are also directed to detailed reading and research in order to reach the targeted level of knowledge in interactive discussion sessions with scenarios that are given to them and include appropriate patient examples. Term 4 students attend lectures on pulmonary diseases in the respiratory-circulatory block within the scope of task training and continue their practical and theoretical training on history, physical examination, diagnosis, follow-up and treatment of patients with interactive discussion at the bedside. Term 6 students work in the pulmonology clinic for 1 month as an intern doctor and during this period, they closely monitor the preparation, treatment and follow-up of patients, stay on night shifts, make case presentations and scientific article presentations for their practical and theoretical education.
