HISTORY
With the decision of the Council of Higher Education dated 22.09.1982 and numbered 3939, the Department of Forensic Medicine was established within the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Internal Medical Sciences in accordance with paragraph 2 of Article 7 of Law No. 2547.
The Department of Forensic Medicine started its active work on 29.03.2002 after the appointment of Asst. Prof. Dr. Ahmet TURLA as the Head of the Department. Since 2002, specialty education has been given in the Department of Forensic Medicine and 11 specialty students have completed their education and received the title of "Forensic Medicine Specialist". There are 2 faculty members (1 Professor, 1 Associate Professor) and 5 specialization students in the Department.
Our most important goal is to train our specialty students to gain the knowledge and skills to take responsibility in all areas of forensic medicine and to bring them to a level where they can apply this knowledge and skills in a practical sense, and to train them to make independent and impartial decisions under the leadership of science.
Undergraduate students are given theoretical and practical courses on forensic cases that they may encounter in their professional lives.
Our Department organized the "III. NationalSymposium on Children Working and Living on the Streets" between 12-13 June 2004 and the "V. Anatolian Forensic Sciences Congress" between 08-10 September 2006.
Faculty members of our Department are active members of the "Commission for the Prevention andMonitoring of Child Abuse and Neglect" serving within OMU Faculty of Medicine and also take part in various activities, boards and working groups of the Association of Forensic Medicine Specialists.
To date, the faculty members of our department have made presentations to NGOs and the public on topics such as Forensic Medicine, Violence, Child Abuse and Neglect, Human Rights, Legal Responsibilities of physicians, Professional Ethics, Child and Women's Rights, Patient Rights, Physician Rights, both within the University and in Public Institutions and Organizations.
Faculty members of our Department have taken part in the projects listed below, funded by various institutions and the European Union.
-Sexual and Reproductive Health Support Line for Children: Bringing Sexual Abuse to Light Project.
-Training for Forensic Medicine Specialists and Forensic Physicians on Child Abuse and Neglect.
-European Commission Representation in Turkey Reproductive Health Program in Turkey In-Service Training Program for Health Personnel on Gender-Based Violence and its Consequences on Reproductive Health.
-"Crime Scene Investigation Course" organized by Samsun Provincial Police Department.
-Theyalso took part as a "Training Committee Member, Training Coach and Master Trainer" in the Training on Raising the Knowledge Level of Istanbul Protocol for Non-Forensic Medicine Specialist Physicians, Judges and Prosecutors.
